It is also why we as the voting population just don't work anymore too. We were never meant to be dependent on a government, only on God.

The founders of our country knew that they had to maintain a moral and religious people for our constitution to work and so they wanted religion to be taught in all schools, but they also were very specific that this "religion" should consist of 3 and only 3 things. 1)Everything was created by a "Creator" 2)This "Creator" deserved to be worshiped for his masterpiece and 3)The best way we worship this "Creator" is by living a moral life and loving our neighbors. They felt every type of religion could agree with these 3 things and they were very worried about pushing any one theology.

A great book to read about our constitution and the founders is the "5000 Year Leap". It really opened my eyes to what our government should be and what it shouldn't be. We in the church our partly to blame, we allowed the government to take over our job of helping the poor, sick and elderly. Now some evangelicals are jumping into bed with BIG government politicians because they promise better health care and benefits to people and they think this is what the Kingdom of Heaven looks like. Here's the thing Jesus wasn't building a government, he was building a CHURCH!!! Jesus was for freedom from the government, not dependence on it. God is the ultimate broker in freedom, He gave us the freedom to choose a relationship with Him or not. So if God gave us freedom to choose, why would He want us dependent on a government for our needs.

Hey Mark, check these out from "The Tampa Tribune" Sunday Edition (August 2, 2009)

It is interesting how our nation is kind of like our belief system (atleast as it has gone over time and even in our country).

America was an idea and a movement that was led by men who understood that there is a God and the way things were going were not honorable and like God, so they sought to have this new nation of the people and for the people to better honor him. Were we perfect and are we? Not so much.

The Church was once simply a movement that was about God and loving others, and while it's not a bad thing that it got organized, it's not a good thing when a movement becomes an institution that is more about the instituation than what the movement was about.

Nowadays, atleast in the States, we seem to pick and choose what we like about our faith and our national freedom.

Maybe people do need the government to save people from themselves, but I'd rather see people wise up and become atleast reasonable and moral people who really care about each other and about all people in general.

Whereas the government helps keep people in check, it also seems to facilitate people who are looking out for #1.

Back when both movements were in their infancy, the stakes were high for those involved. What if we had to depend on God and each other again?

What if our government leaders were worried about their lives and freedoms, as well as all of those they served? I don't mean that in our cozy 21st Century context, nor would they have to go all the way back to the latter 18th Century, but what if they pondered what kind of Public Servants those people were who sometimes literally lost everything for the sake of others?

The ideas aren't the problem. An immoral and corrupt lot of people who have jacked things up are, and it's up to the people who really care to step up and make things happen.
