Maybe you heard that the San Diego Chargers released their head coach Marty Schottenheimer this week. What is so special about that? Well the chargers were 14-2 last year. Yes, they didn't make it to the Super Bowl but they were 14-2!!!! Marty was let go because of "personality conflicts" with the owner. So they let him go this late in the process that is needed to find a good replacement and with not a whole lot of consideration to the players and other coaches who will now have to find other jobs. It also has been said that Marty can't win in the playoffs and can't get a team over the proverbial hump!
As I listened to this story I though about how similar it is to why many youth pastors are fired! They are out there "winning games" have great "records" and are loved by their "players" but because of a personality conflict with the Senior pastor, parent or board member they are let go. This happens so often. Or they are let go because they can't win the Super Bowl of Numbers that most youth workers are graded on. Just couldn't get us to some magical number of kids!! Sound familiar to any of you. The reality is most of these youth workers do find other jobs and the people that really suffer are the kids. They have invested in getting to know their youth worker and then the rug is pulled out from under them, don't churches realize what they are doing? They don't stick with people for the long haul so they ultimately end up losing.
Sure plenty of youth workers do deserve to be let go but over the last 16 years I have met a lot of people with great hearts and a love for kids that were fired for the dumbest reasons. How sad.
There was another coach fired a couple of years back who had winning records every year, loved his players and motivated them to new heights. People said he couldn't win the BIG ONE! Couldn't get his team over the top. So they let him go. That coach is Tony Dungy. Oh, by the way the team that fired him was 3-13 last season.
Nuff Said!
